Liverpool Signs Hungarian Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai
Liverpool has made its second signing of the 2023 summer transfer window, bringing in Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. The 21-year-old player joins the club after spending two and a half years in the German league with RB Leipzig, where he played 91 matches in all competitions.
Szoboszlai has signed a five-year contract with the English club until 2028. Liverpool activated the release clause in his contract with Leipzig, which was set at 70 million euros.
The young midfielder will wear the number 8 jersey, following in the footsteps of his childhood idol and club legend Steven Gerrard. In an interview with the official Liverpool website, Szoboszlai stated, “I will wear the number 8 because I have a tattoo of Steven Gerrard. He was my role model as a child. Klopp? Yes, he called me. That’s true. I said, ‘Okay, this will be very good.’ Everything was perfect.”
Szoboszlai was an important player for Leipzig since his move from Red Bull Salzburg in 2021. He played 48 matches during the 2022-2023 season and scored 10 goals. He also regularly represents Hungary and has 32 international caps.
Third Most Expensive signing in Liverpool’s History
Szoboszlai becomes Liverpool’s second signing of the summer after the acquisition of Alex MacAllister from Brighton for 42 million euros. He also becomes the third most expensive signing in the club’s history, following Virgil van Dijk (84 million euros) and Diogo Jota (80 million euros).
